“We’re excited about using the SAQ accreditation to promote our business and provide a safe and healthy environment for our customers and staff”

The owners of The Cat's Back, a unique, award-winning west London pub, called in SAQ to carry out a thorough air quality survey of the premises. They wanted to achieve the SafeAirQuality Standard Accreditation in recognition of the essential role indoor air quality plays in the creation of a safe and healthy environment for their customers and staff.

SAQ engineers discretely took average air quality sample data from each room in the building during a normal occupied evening. The subsequent air quality report identified some areas for improvement and included detailed advice and remediation measures.

Our survey identified elevated particulate PM-10 and PM-3 and carbon dioxide levels which would normally be associated with multiple occupancy premises such as entertainment venues, shops, pubs, bars, restaurants, cinemas etc. We also found an identifiable combination of VOCs, traces of carbon monoxide arising from paraffin wax candles and the open fire, traces of formaldehyde from building materials, paints, adhesives, sealants and cleaning products associated with a recent redecoration of the premises, and slightly elevated humidity levels. All these factors were analysed using our trademark analysis modelling software.

Our recommended remediation measures included installing an affordable environmentally-friendly activated carbon filtration system, hepa filters and ionisers and a specific indoor planting programme and advice on cleaning regime and associated products.

The owners were able to quickly act on our advice and six weeks after the initial air quality survey, our engineers returned to the premises for a follow-up visit. The significant improvement in the air quality allowed us to issue the Cat’s Back with the SafeAirQuality standard accreditation.

SAQ continues to work with the Cat’s Back as part of the SafeAirQuality Standard Accreditation, carrying out air quality tests every six months to ensure a continued safe indoor environment.
